Description of Bartholomew Roberts

Black Bart Roberts’ or Bartholomew Roberts’ well-known Jolly Roger flag, depicted him sipping wine while holding a flaming spear in the hand of a skeleton or devil. On Roberts’ flag, he was seen holding a sword and perched above two skulls. The initials ABH and AMH underneath the skulls stood for the severed heads of the governors of Barbados and Martinique, respectively (“A Barbadian Head” and “A Martiniquan Head”), who both dispatched ships after Roberts. The skull and crossbones flag may have gained greater widespread recognition as the “Jolly Roger” because of its affiliation with Bartholomew Roberts, who flew it among other flags aboard his fleet of ships.
