Description of Damballa

Damballa is a powerful spirit in Haitian Voodoo and other African diaspora religious traditions like Obeah. He is typically depicted as a large white or black serpent, originating in the modern-day Benin city of Wedo. He is regarded as the Sky Father and the originator of all life. Damballa is portrayed as compassionate, smart, and kind, yet remote and separated from the struggles and sorrows of everyday human existence. His presence alone offers tranquility, as he represents a continuity that is “both the ancient past and the guarantee of the future.” As a serpent, and because of his advanced age, he does not talk but may whistle or hiss softly.
