Description of Ereshkigal

In Mesopotamian mythology, Ereshkigal was the goddess of the Underworld, or Netherworld, also known as the Land of the Dead. One of Mesopotamia’s earliest goddesses, she was the twin sister of the important deity Enki and the daughter of the “Skyfather” Anu, the main deity. Before sharing authority with the deity Nergal, who later became her husband and king, Ereshkigal ruled her kingdom alone. Irkalla, the name of the Underworld, is occasionally used to refer to her, akin to how Hades in Greek mythology was used to describe both the Underworld and its ruler.
