Description of Fasces Lictoriæ

Representing the dominating force of authority and justice, the fasces lictoriae (a cluster of rods tied together around an axe) symbolized the unity and power of the Roman State. The axe in the center of the fasces was a hard-hitting symbol of the Roman government’s ability to maintain order and discipline in society using the power of punishment.
