Description of Papa Azaka

In Haitian Vodou mythology, AzakaAzacca or Papa Azaka is the loa of the harvest. The old and profound relationships between Earth and agricultural people are under his control. He is a divine being, as well as a prankster. He is kind, industrious, good-natured, and protective, but when he is hungry or feels mistreated, he can be harsh and vicious. Papa Azaka knows the soil’s secrets. He is a great herbalist who appears in dreams to give advice and directions. His iconography is like that of Saint Isidore the Laborer, who likewise has a sack thrown over one shoulder.
