Description of Tullus Hostilius

Tullus Hostilius was the third king of Rome, and his reign was bloodstained with war. He was Romulus’ nephew on his mother’s side and was elected king after Numa’s death. Tullus Hostilius is remembered for his ambitious reign, in which he expanded Rome’s dominion over its neighbouring countries. He fought against the Alba Longa, the Veientians and the Sabines, securing a multitude of important victories for the Empire. Tullus Hostilius, however, neglected the religious aspects of his kingdom and for this, according to Roman myths, was punished by the gods with a plague. He died being struck by lightning while trying to appease Jupiter with a sacrifice.
