Description of The Eye of Providence
Freemasonry is frequently linked to The Eye of Providence, which first appeared in 1797 with the release of Thomas Smith Webb’s The Freemason’s Monitor as a component of the traditional Freemason iconography. In this use, the Eye, symbolizing the all-seeing eye of God, serves as a reminder that God—whom Masonry refers to as the Great Architect of the Universe—is constantly aware of humankind’s thoughts and acts. The Masonic Eye of Providence typically has a semicircular glory below it and occasionally has a triangle around it. It serves to remind Freemasons of the need to live humbly and in harmony with all of creation.
