Sea Snakes

Description of Sea Snakes

Sea Snakes are lengthy, undulating, serpentine shapes that visualize the mythic sea snake, honoring the ocean as the giver and taker of life for the Nazca maritime culture through its perils and provisions. Nazcan fishermen harvested the sea’s bounty, but also feared its treacherous storms, dangerous creatures, and insufficient yields. The sinuous sea snake geoglyphs may have aimed to appease the ocean’s mercurial spirit and request balanced, harmonious reciprocity.
